有氯化氢气味，具溶解性。加热则挥发，约在430℃时升华。在水中分解成氧氯化铋，能溶于盐酸、硝酸、无水乙醇、丙酮和乙酸乙酯。 制造铋盐，有机反应催化剂，高纯材料。 

应用

氯化铋 (III) 可作为催化剂用于以下过程：
醇解、乙酰化和环氧化物水解生成相应的的 β-烷氧基和 β-乙酰氧基醇和二醇。
用硫氰酸铵从环氧乙烷制备噻吩。
羰基化合物、胺和亚磷酸二烷基酯三组分偶联生成 α-氨基膦酸盐。
烯丙基三甲基硅烷与仲苯甲醇的烯丙基化反应。
[4 + 2] 二烯烃与α-羰基烯二烯烃之间的环加成反应。

Bismuth(III) chloride is an inorganic salt that can be prepared by the reaction of bismuth with chlorine.
Bismuth(III) chloride may be used as a catalyst in the following processes: · Alcoholysis, acetolysis and hydrolysis of epoxides to form the corresponding β-alkoxy and β-acetoxy alcohols and diols. · Preparation of thiiranes from oxiranes using ammonium thiocyanate. · Three component coupling of carbonyl compound, amine and dialkyl phosphite to form α-amino phosphonates. · Allylation of secondary benzyl alcohols with allyltrimethylsilane. · [4 + 2] cycloaddition between dienes and α-carbonyl ethylenic dienophiles.
